INSTITUTE OF EDUCATION

Irish Leaving Certificate (ILC)

The Institute of Education, (IoE) Dublin is a leading pre-university day school for 4th, 5th and 6th year students and repeat Irish Leaving Certificate students of all abilities.  Singapore and Malaysian students will normally join the 2-year Irish Leaving Certificate course (ILC), or the 6-month or 1-year repeat course which A-Level students can switch into if they are not happy with their A-Level results.

From day one IoE has built its reputation on the quality of its teachers. It recruit the very best teaching talent in the country- teachers who are experienced, focused and professional and who consistently achieve excellent results for their students. Many of its teachers are authors of standard school textbooks and are regular contributors to educational publications and radio programs. The very successful ‘Exam Times’ educational supplements published every year by The Irish Times are written and complied by teachers from IoE.

The student support team is a central part of IoE, and is committed to working with its students and helping them achieve their full potential. The aim is to ensure that students with specific learning difficulties or other needs which may impact on their academic progress are given the opportunity to achieve their full potential in the school.

Students live with Irish families that are carefully selected by the Institute.

The ILC qualification is a passport to Irish medical/dental/vet science schools. It consists of 6 subjects and the grades are converted into points for university admission purposes.  An attractive feature of the ILC is that in Ireland, there are two streams for medical/dental/vet science studies.  The more able students who have scored high ILC points will be admitted to a 5-year medical course, while those who scored lower will be considered for the 6-year course, the first year of which is known as the Foundation Year.

Note however that this Foundation Year is not the same as a Foundation Course in which students are not yet admitted into the medical school and are in fact competing for a limited number of places in the medical school for which it is affiliated.  In the 6-year medical course, students in the first year or Foundation Year are already in the medical school.  If they pass their year end exams, they will be promoted to Year 1 of the medical course.

The tuition fees range from about €7,000 to 11,000.
